Are you thinking of keeping Valais Blacknose Sheep?
Valais are a rare and unique breed that are very new to this country, as such the stock available is limited, unfortunately this means that there are some pitfalls associated with aquiring good quality, healthy animals. If you are looking to get in to the breed here are some things to consider before you buy....
Some breeders are offering the opportunity to buy commercial sheep that have had VBN lamb embryos transferred to them. Be aware when buying these that there are a few flaws in this breeding method: 1. Temperament - part of the Valais' charm is their lovely placid and friendly personalities; commercial sheep are bred purely with production in mind and can be flighty, potentially rearing lambs to be the same 2. Genetics - using embryo transfer allows a breeder to flush around half a dozen embryos per cycle, instead of the usual 1 or 2; this means that the same few ewes are being used to produce a prolific number of lambs, putting a lot of stock on the ground but severely restricting the gene pool 3. Quality - if you buy an ET ewe without seeing the genetic parents of the lambs, you may be sold sub-quality stock at an unreasonable price
Due to the relatively small population not all VBN being bred from are of good quality in terms of meeting the breed standard - with a small population it can be necessary to breed from such animals as long as they are healthy, in order to stop the genetic variation getting too low, and in some cases it can be wise to outcross to other breeds and then "breed up" back to standard. Before buying a Valais, talk to the breeder and make sure that you are happy that they are a considerate, conscientious producer that is not breeding indiscriminately and that the price they are charging is fair according to the quality of the animals. A good breeder should be happy to answer any questions you have and not just be interested in how much money you have to spend!
